2018 recap

Last post of the year, it's time to look at the work achieved in 2018.

My initial objective was to focus my efforts on the shooting units. It worked quite well in the first months, as I've been able to align a regiment of 10 crossbowmen and a regiment of 10 woodsmen armed with bows (and sometimes birds), each including one Marauder unreleased model.

After that, I got a little bit distracted, first with a musician (for the City Watch), then by trying to paint the first element of my baggage train. In the end, I was only able to paint the cooks and the waiters, as I'm still looking for a proper solution to attach the mule to the cart. And then, I got even more distracted by painting a Mordheim warband for an online contest... still I used it as an opportunity to prepare my third unit of shooters.

From October, I totally gave up my initial plans, and went for a new online contest - this time lasting one year - mainly focusing on elite troops for my imperial army. So far, I've been able to paint 10 Reiskguards (actually Söllsguards in the Sudenland context), and one cannon with its dwarf servant.

In the end, it makes 51 models painted (including the cannon and the leprechaun escorting the woodsmen): 2 Marauder dwarfs, 1 MM42 Ogre, 2 unreleased Marauder models, 1 unreleased Magic User (now available at Wargames Foundry), 8 MM60 Fighters, 11 MM62 citizen, 9 MM65 Reiskguards, 1 Citadel cannon, 2 Citadel Talisman models, and 14 Citadel F2 fighters.

As you can see, a few standards are missing, I'll try to fix this next year (my prioriy being the Söllsguard).

Now, considering the whole army, three years of painting give a decent force of around 130 models (some already useless and looking for a new role).

To be honest, I'm a little bit disappointed by these pictures: my Pfeildorfers look dull. I'll try to take new pictures as soon as I have a third lamp to light the scene. Hopefully, it will bring some improvement.
My plans for next year involve cavalry (using the MM66 mounted Reiksguards), warmachines, a few heroes, and "something big" (one of the sessions of the online contest), for which I haven't made up my mind yet. Could be the steamtank, a griffin or a more ambitious conversion. We'll see!

Well, that's it, I think I have at least one model of every single Marauder Miniature produced for the Empire. I try now to include one copy of each model in this army, which is quite a challenge for the MM62 Citizen range, and a pain for the MM61 Command Group, as their Renaissance style is not very well suited to the rest of the troops.

Ahem... No game at all with this army, but I still count the points according to the 3rd Edition Warhammer Armies Book (don't ask me why).

So far, we have
  • 272 points for Pfeildorf's militia: 32 Ersatzholder with Spears and Light Armour, including musician and standard-bearer;
  • 170 points for the mercenary swordsmen: 16 Estalian Hombres Villanos, including a standard bearer;
  • 99 points for the first unit of fanatics: 8 Fleglers with double handed weapons and a standard-bearer;
  • 99 points for the second unit of fanatics: 8 Fleglers with double handed weapons and a standard-bearer;
  • 243 points for the City Watch: 26 Helblitzen including musician and standard-bearer;
  • 100 points for the mercenary crossbowmen: 10 Armbrustschutzen;
  • 130 points for the woodsmen: 10 Bergjaeger;
  • 72 points for the Pfeildorf bowmen: 5 Forstjaeger including standard-bearer;
  • 121 points for the Söllsguard: 10 Reiksgards including musician;
  • 60 points for the cannon: 1Reiks Kanone Batterien (1 crew missing);
  • 0 point for the baggage train.
 Total: 1366 points. I think I still need at least two years to reach 3000 points...

  1. Wow, it's the most wonderful time of year, seeing your work laid out like this. You have been a very good boy, Santa will almost certainly bring you something nice.

    1. Thanks. I don't expect anything from Santa, eBay has filled all my miniatures dreams :(

Bravo.

    1. Yep, du matos et de la compétence. Ca dépasse mes habituels liège + sable.

  5. Magnifique! Beautiful army, and an impressive output for this year...such high standard too. Happy Christmas and good luck for 2019.

  6. A stunning army and great effort on it this year. As a kid I used to read those old army lists in the original Warhammer Armies book over and over again and I loved the Empire one. It's great to see it being done justice all these years later. I can't wait to see the finished 3,000 point army!

  7. This is such exemplary and inspirational work. Not enough can be said, I've only discovered your blog this year and have read much of it along with comments to glean useful painting advice.

    Have you ever considered coming to the United States to Adepticon in March? It is a great show and you could exhibit some of your work there. Perhaps our local gaming guild would pay for your travels to the U.S. if you were interested. This would help to create more buzz around "Oldhammer" styled games at Adepticon as newer and younger gamers get into the "Hobby".

    Another question, if you use Citadel paints do you paint with something like Lahmian Medium to create more time to do wet blending. The blending you have is flawless.

    1. Thanks. I don't use any Citadel paint and any medium. Just water (and Vallejo, P3, Andrea and the army painter references)

  8. C'est vraiment magnifique bravo :). Je commente pas souvent mais je regarde régulièrement ton blog et punaise ça tue. Entre ça et tes nains ça fait de la belle vieillerie tout ça.
