OWAC V - More pikemen

Second month of the OWAC V, and second unit of pikemen, after the canton of Uri / BlackHorns clan painted last year. This time, I wanted something inspired from the canton of Schwyz: these new dwarves would wear red and white, and carry a banner showing a white cross on a red background. Efficient, and  simple to paint 😁

The Bernese Chronicle

 

Admittedly a rather ordinary regiment... until I see this picture in the Chronicon Helvetiae:

No clue what this jester is doing in this illustrated chronicle, but I wanted one for my unit, seconding his lord, and cheering the  guards with lame jokes. So, instead of aligning 10 additional dwarves from the marauder MB1 and MM15 ranges, I have replaced two of them by the gnome jester of the Dwarf King's Court set and the Baron of the Dwarf Lords of Legend set. Et voilà!

With this regiment, I have now painted all the mandatory troops for a 3rd edition Warhammer dwarf army: 40 warriors split into 20 pikemen and 20 halberdiers, and two units of 10 crossbowmen each 🍻

 

Next month should see a new clan with harquebuses and a hairy mascotte...

OWAC V - More crossbowmen

Back to my Swiss mercenar... sorry Grey Mountaineers, with a second regiment of quarellers, led by Wilhelm Tellson, renown for the deadly accuracy of his pistol crossbow... or the unbelievable luck of his page, Walter Swiftfoot. 

Of course, any ressemblance to legendary swiss characters is purely accidental...

All the marksmen are clothed in the BlackHorns colours of black and yellow. A short summary of the colours I've used:

• Yellow: basecoat: VMC Plague Brown; shadow: GW Reikland Fleshshade and P3 Bloodstone; highlights: base + VMC Pale Sand and Ivory, then pure Ivory;
• Black: basecoat: VMC Extra Opaque Heavy Charcoil; shadows: GW Contrast Black Templar; highlights: the base + VGC Bone white; 
• White: basecoat Andrea white paint set (darkest tone); shadows: TMP Strong Tone shade; highlights: basecoat + VMC Ivory or VMC Sky Grey;
• Red: basecoat Andrea red paint set (2nd tone); shadows: VMC Dark Red and GW Contrast Flesh Tearers Red; highlights: VGC Hot Orange and VMC Basic Skin Tone.
  

In terms of miniatures, Wilhelm Tellson is a conversion of a MM11 champion, where the original handgun has been replaced by a pistol crossbow. 

 

 

The Swiftfoot brothers are MM64 halflings, transformed into musician and standard bearer. 

The other quarellers are basic MM15 models.

With this regiment, my collection of painted Marauder crossbowmen can be considered (almost) achieved! 

Next month, I should complete the 40 mandatory warriors with 10 additional pikemen.

Preparing OWAC V

After considering elves, skaven, and melniboneans, I've finally made up my mind for this new edition of the Old World Army Challenge: puff and slash dwarfs again 😜

For OWAC V, my plan is simple: add 10 pikemen and 10 crossbowmen to complete the mandatory troops (i.e. 40 Dwarf warriors and 20 crosssbowmen), boost the fire power of my mercenary dwarfs with 20 thunderers, and finally paint my mounted general 🐴

If time permits, I will paint a few extras, including wild dwarfs, new bodyguards for the paymaster, and a cart for the bishop.
