Pieter the Pious

To lead my pilgrims to the disaster and conclude OWAC III, one key character was missing: Pieter the Pious.

My initial plan was to add something liked the golden cross carried by the crusaders army Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven movie.

In the end, I found easier to combine the war altar sculpted by Michael Perry, with the bearers of the C22 Slann wizard designed by Trish Morrison.

As you can see on the following pictures, I've slightly converted the altar by adding candles and a little lectern. The not-so-gold NMM is a mix of Battledress Green P3, darkened by VMC Brown Violet and sometimes Dark Sea Blue, and highlighted with VMC Japan Uniform, VMC Ivory and sometimes white. The oxydation is made by glazes of different shades of turquoise, light blue and green-blue. 

Regarding the bearers, I've briefly considered adding them hoods, but the heads and necks are so weird that I wasn't sure about the final result. I've finally painted a black cross on their face, to give them a pilgrim flavor.

Regarding Pieter, I've chosen a Citadel C3 cleric (called Inner Sight) whose posture is close to the altar. I can't say it's a great model (arms a little bit too thick and legs a little bit short), but it'll do the job, I guess.

In terms of points, Pieter is a level 20 wizard: 240 points. So that's it, I've reached the 1000 points in 5 months, right on time to pack all my stuff and move out!

Moving out

Almost 6 years in the same place, it's been a while since I have wrapped my collection of miniatures in toilet paper :)

Before packing my Pfeildorf army, I took a few pictures, to remind me how this army looks and what are the missing troops.

Once the OWAC III challenge is done, I plan to add at least two cavalry units (still around 15 MM66 models to paint!), complete the city watch, strengthen Pfeildorf's militia with a new guild master and some spearmen, paint a last rank of hired swordsmen, add a regiment of handgunners and possibly one of crossbowmen, finish the baggage train, recruit a bunch of halfling peasants, beef up the Söllsguard knights, and add a few wizards... in other words, paint every single Marauder Miniature that I have in stock...

... and I also need to learn how to take decent pictures of armies 😆

The hermits

Second part of April's entry to the OWAC, I've used some flagellants, initially bought for my Pfeildorf army, to build a regiment of gunners, inspired from John Blanche's illustration you can find in the artbook "Blood on the Reik".

I wish I could produce something like Gerontius, the blind priest, but my sculpting talents being what they are, meaning inexistant, I've simply trimmed down some details, removed the flails and the clubs, and glued some bits from the Empire handgunners and free company boxes. Et voilà!

For the fourth month of the OWAC, my initial plan was to paint a small regiment of beggars (counting as flagellants) following Pieter the Pious... until I see on the web the cannon model released by Lead Adventure Miniatures for the Bruegelburg range: the "Death-Bell" (reference BRU-62) couldn't be a better fit for my pilgrim army!
 

To crew this warmachine, I've picked old Citadel models designed by the Perrys. You can still find them on the Wargames Foundry webstore (reference MED314 - Feudal Artillery Crew).

As I was missing a few points, I decided to strengthen the crew with a bombardier, a monk more keen on studying ballistics than praying.

The procession

OK. Third month of the OWAC III, and first weeks of confinement, not as helpful as expected to work on Pieter the Pious and his worshipers. Anyway, I've been able to complete my third unit: a procession of pilgrims led by Bishop Maximus.

Most of the miniatures used here come from the Citadel C03 Clerics series, mainly - if not exclusively ? - designed by Bob Naismith, plus a few models designed by Aly Morrison, and one C46 pilgrim model designed by Trish Carden.

Regarding the conversions, I've tried to emphasize the religious aspect of my pilgrims by adding candles wherever I could. For "Candle head", I had in mind the Dark Souls III Grand Archives Scholar (I'm still trying to find a model suitable for the "candelar sword")

For the standard bearer, I have trimmed down all the cabalistic signs on the robe of the wizard, replaced the staff by a brass rod, glued the flag initially held by Helldorado's Alvaro Echevarria model and topped by a set of plastic candles from the Luminark of Hysh box.

As for the cleric of the BBD1 Dungeon Adventurers set, I have restored the original equipment by replacing the ankh of my variant by a greenstuff cross.

For Cleric Saint Ogg, I've simply replaced the original head by the hood of a Necromunda Cawdor ganger to give him a more sinister look: 

Regarding the painting, I've tried to apply the same palette on every model:

• Robes based with a mix of VMC Beige and VMC Chocolate Brown, darkened with Chocolate Brown and VMC Dark Sea Blue and highligthed with Beige and VGC Dead Flesh, 
• Hoods based with VGC Heavy Charcoil, darkened with pure black and highlighted by adding VGC Bone White to the base,
• Candles based with GW Rakarth Flesh, then TMP Strong Tone, then VMC Sky Grey and finally VMC Ivory,
• NMM using a mix Dark Sea Blue and VMC Mahogany Brown, then P3 Greatcoat Grey, then VMC Sky Blue and white.
