OWAC V - More pikemen

Second month of the OWAC V, and second unit of pikemen, after the canton of Uri / BlackHorns clan painted last year. This time, I wanted something inspired from the canton of Schwyz: these new dwarves would wear red and white, and carry a banner showing a white cross on a red background. Efficient, and  simple to paint 😁

The Bernese Chronicle

Admittedly a rather ordinary regiment... until I see this picture in the Chronicon Helvetiae:

No clue what this jester is doing in this illustrated chronicle, but I wanted one for my unit, seconding his lord, and cheering the  guards with lame jokes. So, instead of aligning 10 additional dwarves from the marauder MB1 and MM15 ranges, I have replaced two of them by the gnome jester of the Dwarf King's Court set and the Baron of the Dwarf Lords of Legend set. Et voilà!

And the rest of the bunch:

Now grouped for the family shots:

With this regiment, I have now painted all the mandatory troops for a 3rd edition Warhammer dwarf army: 40 warriors split into 20 pikemen and 20 halberdiers, and two units of 10 crossbowmen each 🍻

Next month should see a new clan with harquebuses and a hairy mascotte...

  1. You're right: the red and white pairing makes a great impression, even if you've used shades that make them richer. Could you give us some indication of the colors you used for the white?
The idea of adding the baron as commander of the pikemen, and above all the jester, is original. We were intrigued by the image of the Swiss chronicle and went to view the scans of the original manuscript. The presence of the jester refers to the battle of Morgarten in 1315, a founding event of Swiss identity. According to a tradition, the Duke of Austria Leopold asked his jester for an opinion on the invasion of Switzerland he was carrying out, and he replied: "You have all taken counsel how best to get into the country, but have given no explanation of how you are going to get out again! ".
The jester would therefore be Austrian, and the red and white striped colors would be rather those of the Habsburgs ... but you know what these jesters are like, they are free spirits, and therefore in a fantasy world nothing prevents you from imagining that your gnome has passed over to the side of the merrier Swiss dwarfs!
That said, the photos of your deployed military units make a truly magnificent impression! I believe that an enemy could not say, as Duke Leopold of Habsburg did recklessly in 1315, that they are just a mass of peasants ...

  2. Rodor, thanks a lot for the historical clarifications!
    Regarding the white tones:
    - basecoat Andrea white paint set (darkest tone)
    - shadows: TMP Strong Tone shade
    - highlights: basecoat + VMC Ivory or VMC Sky Grey

  4. There is just so much detail and character in each of these minis. Of course the quality of the sculpture helps but you certainly played a huge part with a fantastic paint job.
